The Yancey Soil and Water Conservation District is located in the western mountain region of North Carolina. It has the exact same boundaries as that of Yancey County and is adjacent to the counties of Buncombe, Madison, McDowell, and Mitchell in North Carolina and Unicoi County in Tennessee. The total area that the District covers is 200,704 acres. Burnsville is the county seat and is 45 miles from Asheville, 140 miles from Charlotte and 115 miles from Knoxville, Tennessee.
The topography of the area is predominately mountainous which is the areas biggest hindrance for different land uses. Elevations run from a low of under 2,000 feet in the fertile river valleys to a high 6,684 feet on Mt. Mitchell the highest peak east of the Mississippi river.
Directions
From I-26
Take exit 9 onto Highway 19 E. Go approximately 17 miles. Travel through the second traffic light. Turn right approximately 300 yards. Our office will be in the middle. The building is half rock.
From Spruce Pine
Travel 15 miles on Highway 19 E traveling west. Entering into Yancey County, travel through three red lights. Continue approximately ½ mile. The office will be on the left between US Forest Service and Flick Video. The building is half rock.
